PEUGEOT 508 RXH Specifications and Pics

View Comments

Diesel-electric hybrid and distinctive ‘high-end’ appeal combine to offer an original view of the world of all-wheel drive vehicles with enhanced driving pleasure: introducing the new Peugeot 508 RXH.
RXH demonstrates the modern, enhanced ‘top-of-the-range’ vision for Peugeot, and has its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The style of the 508 RXH and its innovative HYbrid4 drive unit provide features that allow it to combine new levels of driving freedom and pleasure in a form not seen before in its segment:
  • 200 bhp
  • ZEV - 100% electric mode
  • Four-wheel drive
  • CO2 emissions of 109 g/km
After the successful launch of the 508 Saloon and SW in spring 2011, where they were highly acclaimed for their styling elegance, on-the-road presence, high levels of build quality and attention to detail, the 508 RXH further elevates the profile of the entire Peugeot brand reinforcing its technological and environmental leadership.
The 508 RXH has a road presence and specific design that immediately places it in the environment of ‘top-level’ all road vehicles. Unique, refined, higher and wider, it is also distinguished by a singular visual identity, characterised by its distinctive LED daytime running lights that give an impression of having three vertical ‘lion claws’ on each side of its ‘floating’ grille, the combined style of which is all the more striking.
To reinforce its exclusive character, the interior of the 508 RXH benefits from special features with distinctive colours and the use of luxurious materials.
Its unique level of finish and equipment is coherent with the ‘top-of-the-range’ and technological positioning of the vehicle. Richly equipped as standard with electric front seats, head up display, 18" wheels, panoramic glass roof, dark-tinted acoustic laminated side windows, half leather trim, head up display, latest generation audio and satellite navigation RXH welcomes its occupants with care, refinement and a high level of comfort features.
Equipped with the 2.0 l HDi FAP HYbrid4 powertrain, a world first when featured in the 3008 HYbrid4, the diesel-electric hybrid in the 508 RXH extends driving freedom and pleasure to traverse all roads. With a maximum power of 147 kW (200 bhp), four-wheel drive and a maximum torque of 450 Nm, the 508 RXH has been designed to adapt to all uses, in a wide spectrum of conditions. Furthermore, it opens up new perspectives in the segment, offering a ZEV (100% electric) mode, ideal for driving in town and capable of delivering, in the Combined Drive Cycle, 67.2 mpg with CO2 emissions of 109 g/km.
Following the launch of the 3008 HYbrid4 in the autumn, the Peugeot Marque continues its innovative strategy, combining enhanced driving sensations and advanced environmental developments by extending HYbrid4 technology to other models.
The 508 RXH will be unveiled as a world premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 2011, and goes on sale in spring 2012.

Peugeot 508 RXH
The 508 RXH represents the new, up market positioned Peugeot. It sees the launch of an identity that combines the traditional designation of Peugeot models, incorporating the central zero, and three letters that characterise the Marques specialist vehicles. This new model both heads up and extends the 508 range, with an original design silhouette, justifying its exclusive designation – RXH.

A distinctive appeal
The 508 RXH styling has its own distinctive character within the 508 range. Its elegance and style place it immediately in an exclusive world that combines premium-positioning, technology with the ability to experience adventure and promises of a new and unparalleled driving experience.

With a 40 mm wider track and its height increased by 50 mm, this new Peugeot has an individual stance, without sacrificing the characteristics of the 508 range - poise, elegance and status. The use of new, 18” forged wheel rims allowed designers to create a very fine wheel design with an internal diameter increased by 10 mm in comparison with conventional wheel rims. The result is a dynamic and elegantly enhanced body style.
Its adventurous side profile is illustrated through the bodywork extensions in satin stealth grey that envelope the lower body of the car. From the bottom of the front bumper, the line extends over the wheel arches, along the sill panels to meet the rear bumper. The choice of the satin trim finishers contribute to position this estate car within a refined world, as do the satin chrome inserts, with 'HYbrid4' badging, that adorns the sill panel, and front and rear protective trims. Fully integrated, they reflect the integrity applied to the cohesive design of the 508 RXH.
This individual personality is more striking at the front end, which has become even more expressive while maintaining the strength of the brand’s new style aesthetics. Accompanying a wider and taller body silhouette, the grille is extended on its lower edge. More strikingly, the new grille accentuates the illusion that it is ‘floating’ within the aperture. To achieve this, designers have taken influence from aviation reference points, notably taking inspiration from aircraft jet engine cowls. The air therefore seems to be well-channelled around the grille, which stands out distinctly from the bonnet line.
Its distinctive style lines give the 508 RXH a very individual visual identity. It is the first Peugeot to use the iconic theme of the ‘claw’ on the front. Its LED daytime running lights illuminate to form three ‘lion claws’, instantly recognisable by day and by night to reinforce the characteristic ‘feline’ appearance of the head lamps. This unique and dynamic signature is complemented with the illumination of seven orange LEDs, from within the LED tube that is an original directional indicator function.
Like the 508 SW, the lines flow together in a harmonious and dynamic manner, falling back to a rear that is well seated on its haunches. The extensive panoramic glass roof has the benefit of being a continuation of the windscreen, with the profiled aluminium roof bars merging with the bodywork to enhance the exclusivity of the car. In this spirit, there are flush surfaces, highlighted by its high build quality finish. At the rear, the lights portray an elegant red band that glows brightly when the lights are on.

Refined interior styling and technology
The styling of the dashboard is centred heavily around the qualities evoked by the exterior design of the vehicle, with continued illustrations of high quality, purity, elegance, etc. Its design supports a multiplex centre console with switchgear that is equipped with technology designed to provide easy control to a host of features.

This purity and simplicity of design and integration is best demonstrated on the HYbrid4 drive mode selection knob and the gear selector lever. It has the design that combines the traditional gear selector lever and a computer mouse called the 'manettino' - it fits perfectly into this pure and technological environment.
White backlighting is available throughout the 508 RXH interior (on the instrument panel, displays and the various lighting zones within the car), showing great care in detail and finish. It is this and the attention to detail that illustrates the hallmarks of the latest Peugeot range.
The car’s internal trim and decor have been created in harmony, evoking elegance without ostentation. The use of natural materials and colours, sometimes exclusively, enhance the distinctive character of the 508 RXH. Brushed aluminium and shaded lacquers are used on the dashboard for the first time in this way. A spectacular treatment in keeping with the electricity supplied by HYbrid4 technology, this decor is specified in tinted shades of copper. This theme, again unprecedented, is subtly continued throughout the interior with matching trim stitching in this copper shade. The exterior is also themed with a copper colour theme through the colouring of the lock tumblers in Calern Brown, a shade exclusive to the 508 RXH.
The choice of light-coloured alcantara leather and an innovative laser-printed fabric creates a two-tone upholstery that reinforces the refined image of the car. Depending on preference, the customer may opt for full leather or half-leather upholstery.

A generously-proportioned, high-quality boot
In keeping with the vehicle’s interior, the boot of the 508 RXH has been fitted out with care, using materials that continue to reflect a high level of quality with the materials specified. The aluminium rails and four solid chrome hooks elegantly decorate the functional boot floor, while a loading sill guard in the same material offers protection for the rugged ‘adventurer’ potential of this new Peugeot.

The 508 RXH boot has a capacity of 423 litres beneath the parcel shelf (or 400 dm3 in accordance with the VDA 210 standard). Its rectangular shape, with motorised tailgate and the storage compartments located under the flat floor (11 litres) make it easy to use. It is also possible to compartmentalise the boot using partition bars available as accessories, which attach to the aluminium rails inside the boot.
Finally, the loading volume can be increased easily by folding the 1/3 – 2/3 split rear bench seat in a single movement.

Enhancement through technological equipment
The 508 RXH is offered in a single trim finish, generously-equipped, in accordance with its distinctive high-end positioning. All of the high-tech equipment available either as standard or as an option accentuates its exclusive character: ‘Open and Go’ Stop Start, Colour Head Up Display (that includes the display of the navigation system information), main beam head lamps assistance, automatic electric parking brake, new telematics, JBL hi-fi stereo, Peugeot Connect SOS and Assistance, Xenon lights, etc.

A high level of comfort
Quality of comfort aboard the 508 RXH has been the focus of particular care to ensure that each passenger can benefit from individual treatment. In addition to the generous space given to each seat, notably in the rear with excellent leg room and the panoramic glass roof, dedicated equipment allows everyone to have a high-level of comfort: with quad-zone air conditioning, driver’s seat electric lumbar massage, electrically-adjustable driver and passenger seats with adjustable cushion edge and laminated acoustic rear side windows for road noise reduction, etc.

Benchmark for road handling
The suspension and wheel design also contribute to onboard comfort: with a Pseudo-McPherson type front axle and specific HYbrid4 technology, modular multi-arm rear axle. While cleverly incorporating the hybrid architecture and taking into account a new weight distribution, the Peugeot engineers have retained the recognised dynamic characteristics of the 508 range with an excellent synthesis of suspension comfort, light steering and good handling. The 508 RXH is one of the latest generation of vehicles that expresses driving pleasure, due to its Peugeot chassis 'genetics' and full diesel hybrid technology.

HYbrid4 technology: A logical combination
Offering the 508 RXH with a HYbrid4 technology powertrain that combines diesel and electric motors, is a logical choice primarily because it provides a level of functionality that is perfectly matched to the various customer expectations in this segment:
  • High performance combined with first-rate handling;
  • Freedom to travel on all roads with confidence, with all-wheel drive;
  • Ease of use with four unique drive modes available (Zero Emission Vehicle, 4WD, Sport, Auto) and battery charging which is carried out automatically;
  • Quiet operation, with the ability to drive in the all-electric (ZEV) mode.

THE PEUGEOT HX1 CONCEPT CAR

View Comments

The HX1 Concept Car gives Peugeot the opportunity to once again illustrate the marque's ability to reflect on new ideas, learn how to evolve and to continually reinvent itself.
The brief for this concept was to produce a vehicle for up to six people, offering strong styling, that is sporty and efficient and at the same time giving a unique driving sensation.
To achieve this, the HX1 transcends the notions of adaptability in all areas, with its extreme aerodynamics (‘flaps’ are deployed to optimise aero efficiency according to vehicle speed), its tapered, low MPV architecture and its HYbrid4 power plant integrating ‘plug-in’ technology.
A unique and transformable concept, aiming for maximum efficiency

Adaptive
The HX1 is a prospective concept designed to help envisage future solutions in numerous fields: architecture, aerodynamics, modularity, equipment, interior materials and the environment, not forgetting, of course, powerplants. These considerations have led to very strong bias that breaks from the norm and guided by a theme: ‘Metamorphosis’, to give the vehicle the capability to adapt itself to its environment, to life’s conditions, driving conditions, etc. and at any time.

Architecture
To meet specifications, the HX1 has been designed with an MPV architecture with unique dimensions: low (1.373 m) and wide (1.990 m overall) and with a length of 4.954 m.

This allows for a volume suited to pure, elegant and sleek lines that delivers a low Cd figure for maximum overall efficiency.
Four reverse-opening ‘half-scissor’ doors can be opened wide for ease of access to the HX1 passenger compartment. These kinematics have also been researched in terms of practicality and to allow accessibility under all circumstances.
The passenger compartment is structured so as to offer maximum comfort for the two passengers in the rear row and maximum sensation for the occupants of the first row. If required, two retractable seats can be configured in a centre row due to a clever system of “pull-out seats”, based on the same principle used on the HR1 Concept Car (First shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show); these additional seats are integrated behind the front seats.

Aerodynamics
Designers have taken aerodynamics to the extreme with HX1. When stationary and at low speeds the HX1’s styling makes it appear sculpted from a solid form as the moving parts have been adapted to optimise air flow and to enhance the car’s environmental performance. The seven ‘spokes’ in each wheel rim spike, fashioned like a turbine blade, open to create a flat disc surface. At the same time, a spoiler and two side skirts located at the top of the tailgate are deployed above 62.1mph. When moving, the HX1 therefore adapts itself ‘physically’ to its environment.

The vehicle has a Cd of 0.28; an outstanding value for a vehicle with an MPV silhouette.
All of these aerodynamic devices have evolved thanks to the free rein given to the immense creativity of Stylists.
Styling not restricted by norms

Futuristic exterior styling, sculpted through aerodynamics
The HX1 is a vehicle that is pure in style; sculptured, upmarket and exuding dynamism and exclusivity. Aerodynamic, its sleek, elegant and fluid lines seem to have been tailored by the wind itself. They subtly underline the athletic, even muscular, character of the vehicle. Each surface is sculpted with precision, each detail is crafted intricately: mirrors with integral rear view cameras, brushed aluminium window surrounds, millimetre-perfect panel gaps and flush fittings, etc.

At the front, the HX1 enhances Peugeot’s latest design identity. The theme of a unique ‘floating’ front grille, which appears ‘detached’ from the bodywork has been designed to harmonise with the car's tapered lines. The precisely-carved feline head lamps give it an appearance that is evocative of the Marque’s badge and history: the lion, proudly displayed on the front of the bonnet. This look is refined by an LED lighting signature, easily recognisable in the daytime or at night. This visual signature is also found in the rear lights, the boomerang shape of which follows the lines of the rear design.

A high-tech and range-topping interior that refines the ‘Motion & Emotion’ brand signature
The pure and futuristic design of the dashboard and seats, the materials used (floor and fittings in natural oak with inlaid fibre optics, brushed metal, leather, etc.), existing equipment (digital displays, touch-sensitive screens, etc.), designed lighting (LED spotlights, strips backlit by the natural lighting on the headlining, etc.); all of these contribute to create an environment where modernity meets refinement, natural materials meet technology, and so on. This all symbolises the Marque's vision of an upmarket, range-topping interior.

The passenger compartment reflects the Peugeot signature:

‘Emotion’
The front has been designed to provide the driver with maximum sensation. The environment is very sensory and high-tech, with its use of brushed metal and digital components. Here again, the vehicle will adapt itself in the real life situation of the driver. Indeed, the steering column can be moved backwards and forwards electrically in line with the seat adjustment for complete ease of access. The steering wheel movement loads up automatically when the car is put into ‘cruising’ mode for enhanced driver stability and comfort. Finally, the central multifunctional display can be adjusted, leaving only the essential information visible on its edge.

The instrument panel is designed to create the experience of having complete control over the vehicle, like the ‘head-up display’ which presents all of the information to the driver without them having to take their eyes off the road ahead.

“Motion”
At the rear, maximum attention is dedicated to ‘added value’ of features and passenger comfort. The environment and the materials used are bright and natural, a mixture of folded and stitched leather. The two sculpted rear seats recline, a set of controls are grouped in the centre armrest. The centre console includes a minibar and a coffee machine, a discreet acknowledgement to the extensive history of Peugeot products. This console is adorned with white Carrare marble, specially milled ‘by hand’, which contributes to the exclusive and modern environment.

HYbrid4 ‘plug-in’ power plant: even better suited to its surroundings
The HX1 integrates HYbrid4 technology, an innovative modular architecture that figures in the Peugeot range on the 3008 HYbrid4, the first diesel hybrid in the world; technology which will also be present on the 508 RXH in 2012.
The principle behind HYbrid4 is clever, yet simple: With an internal combustion diesel engine at the front (powering the front wheels) and an electric motor to the rear (powering the rear wheels), this technology enables all four wheels to be driven when the engine and motor work together, for increased safety and traction in extreme conditions. It also enables the vehicle to be driven at low speeds powered just by the electric motor in ‘Zero Emissions Vehicle’ mode.
Under the bonnet of the HX1 the engine is a 204 bhp, 2.2 litre HDi diesel, linked to an automatic
6-speed gearbox; the same powertrain as that used on the 508’s range-topping GT version. Coupled with a 70 kW (95 bhp) electric motor, the combined output can develop a potential 220 kW (299 bhp).
However, one of Peugeot’s priorities is to maintain its position as environmental leader in the years to come. The HX1 therefore takes us one step further. It is equipped with ‘plug-in’ functionality: the lithium-ion batteries can be recharged by ‘plugging in’ the vehicle to a standard 240V mains electric socket. This means that it can have a longer ‘ZEV’ range, i.e.: it can cover up to 18.6 miles in all-electric drive mode. The HX1 thus obtains a combined fuel consumption of 88.2mpg with CO2 emissions of 83 g/km.

Concept Shoe
Peugeot, when creating its concept car HX1, teamed up with Pierre Hardy, creator of luxury shoes to design an exclusive ‘concept-shoe’ which would be aligned with appeal, modernity and a unique capacity for transformation.

In collaboration with Stylists from Peugeot, Pierre Hardy created a shoe using materials, technology and quality of manufacture which echoed the interior of the vehicle. In the image of this Concept Car, the shoes adapt themselves to the life of their wearer : a slipper ideal for driving slides into a ‘high-heel’ structure to become an elegant shoe for a more glamourous occasion.

India is the biggest manufacturer of fake degrees in the World!

View Comments

IN Bangalore city you needn’t have to do a course to get an MBA. You can simply buy a certificate for Rs 5,000. The same goes for most degrees. Though the police exposed a major racket in manufacturing fake Bangalore University marksheets and degree certificates recently, several smaller rackets are believed to be still running in the city. These conmen are said to cater in a big way to applicants of ECNR (Emigration Check Not Required) status in passports.“We have information of several racketeers manufacturing fake certificates. It is not difficult to catch them. But getting hold of a few blank certificates would not root them out. We have to get the printing press also and seize it. That’s often difficult,” said a police official.

This August the Tilaknagar police station seized scores of fake Bangalore University marksheets and degree certificates and arrested six people. The printing press that was producing these genuine-looking documents was also seized. They found blank certificates and marksheets for BA, BCom, LLB, MBA, BE, MBBS and BDS streams. What seemed to be most in demand were certificates for the MBA, hotel management diploma ,BPharm and MPharm. The printing setup was simple, but they managed to print genuine looking Bangalore University certificates.

Passport officer Soumen Bagchi said their office does come across forged certificates and the incidence is particularly high among postal applications.“We cross-check with individual Universities as and when a doubt arises. It is impossible to get each university degree certificate verified as our resources are limited. But our staff is very familiar with Bangalore University emblems and signatures and chances of fake BU certificates passing for original are rare,” said Bagchi.

In case of a forged document, the application is rejected and the applicant is penalised. For first time offenders, the penalty is Rs 5,000. Second time offenders are liable to be imprisoned. According to sources in the police department, the fake certificate racket targets ECNR applicants. Except for a few countries, most do not allow foreigners without an ECNR stamp into their country.“The risk of being caught trying to get a job with a fake certificate in India is high because in case of a doubt the employers can at any point get it cross-checked.

The new 2012 Honda Civic

View Comments

The new 2012 Honda Civic will offer a quieter and more refined driving experience to ensure comfortable journeys on all road conditions.
The development team worked hard to sharpen every detail of the design, build and aerodynamics, to optimise the interior refinement in the new Civic. The engineers spent time testing the car in Europe to tune the new Civic to suit the varying road conditions. They also made good use of Honda’s anechoic (echo-free) chamber in its R&D facility in Swindon to fine-tune the cabin insulation. One of the results of the work in the anechoic chamber was to modify the design and construction of the roof lining, and how it interacts with the bodywork.

The new Civic’s aerodynamic efficiency also played a key role in maximising its refinement. Several members of the development team called upon their Formula One experience to help deliver a car that combines a low coefficient of drag with excellent high-speed stability. Hours of meticulous work in the Honda wind tunnel has improved performance, reduced fuel consumption and resulted in an exceptionally quiet interior.

“We did not improve the noise and refinement of the new Civic through just one technique,“ commented Kazuo Sunaoshi, Development Leader – Chassis. “It was the accumulation of lots of little details. My big challenge was to match the noise and vibration levels of our European competitors. I am proud to say that we have achieved our goals.”

The third of five films on the development of the new Civic features Honda engineers discussing noise and refinement . The video can be viewed at www.honda.co.uk/newcivic

Indian Parliament MPs to Get iPads and Samsung Tabs for Official Use

View Comments

The large amounts of freshly printed paperwork that each Rajya Sabha session requires is set to be phased out - in style.
Instead of the expenditure on reports about house business, reports and debates, the Indian parliamentairan will soon be scrolling through memos and bulletins on iPads and Samsung Galaxy Tabs.

A new paper-free initiative is replacing their stationery with a budget of 50,000 INR to purchase tablets, according to the new Computer Equipment Provision rules. Current rules provide for Rs. 1.5 lakh reimbursements for the purchase of computers and peripherals.

"Tablets will replace paper and MPs will make better use of the literature as it can be carried, unlike voluminous paper reports...We are waiting for Rajya Sabha to roll out the scheme and will follow suit," said TK Viswanathan, secretary general, Lok Sabha.
Apps have already been made specifically for Parliamentary use by the National Informatics Centre, compatible with the Samsung Tab and the iPad "keeping in mind the information requirements of Parliament", Khan said.

"For instance, just by a touch, members will be able to see what the starred questions listed for the day are."
The iOS and Android apps allow members to access list of business for the day, papers Laid on the Table of the House, Parliamentary bulletins, a list of questions and even the members birthdays.

While the iPad is extremely user friendly, all MPs will receive training to use the tablet interface. Parliament's central hall and lobby are wi-fi enabled. And all MPs will be trained in the use of the gadgets.

In the United States, RIM's Playbook has been approved for government. Interestingly, the Russian government is considering a ban on the iPad for government use.

in one hand ... it is good that the parliament is going towards paperless transactions... which is environment friendly... also more efficient....

on other hand... apart from fear of a new scam related to another large govt transaction... I am also worried that MPs just got another perk.. in addition to their doubling salary every year....

New Toyota Yaris Releasesd in UK

View Comments

When it comes to buying a new car, balancing what you want with what you can afford is a familiar compromise, but the new Toyota Yaris succeeds not only in delivering the kind of features that are high on most customers’ wish list, but at prices that are eminently affordable. More than that, new Yaris offers lasting value, commanding some best-in-class residual value ratings.
Toyota Yaris
Figures from CAP monitor for new Yaris estimate that, according to grade, it will hold between 39 and 42 per cent of its original value after three years or 30,000 miles, an improvement of between five and seven per cent on the previous generation. The prospect is even stronger for models fitted with the new Toyota Touch and Go satellite navigation and connected information and communications package, with the quoted RV higher by a further two points.
The TR grade – core model in the new Yaris range – demonstrates Toyota’s focus on providing as standard features that are highly desirable for today’s customers, including: -
  • Toyota Touch touchscreen controls
  • 15-inch alloy wheels
  • Bluetooth
  • USB port
  • Rear-view camera (a first-in-segment for standard equipment)
  • Air conditioning
  • Leather trim details
  • Toyota Touch and Go sat-nav and connected services upgrade – free for first six months of new Yaris sales, thereafter an extra-cost option (£500)
  • Seven airbags and vehicle stability control
The five-door 1.33-litre VVT-i TR, expected to be the best-selling model, costs £13,260 on-the-road and has a 40 per cent RV from CAP Monitor – 42 per cent with Touch and Go, the best rating in its class, up to 10 per cent higher than its supermini rivals.
For potential customers, affordability is critical and here, again, new Yaris performs strongly. For example, the entry point to the TR grade, the three-door 1.0-litre VVT-i model, costs £214 a month on an Access Toyota personal contract purchase (PCP) plan*. And it requires just an extra £10 a month to upgrade to the 1.33-litre VVT-I SR model, kitted out with 16-inch smoked chrome alloys and trim, rear privacy glass, part-leather upholstery, sports suspension and rear privacy glass.
The top-of-the range T Spirit, with panoramic glass roof, automatic headlights and wipers, Smart Entry and Start and dual-zone climate control, adds no more than £18 to the SR monthly PCP price.
For added peace of mind, all new Yaris are backed by Toyota’s five-year/100,000-mile warranty.

KEY POINTS
  • Toyota quality and desirable, “intelligent” specifications produce excellent residual values for new Yaris
  • Core TR grade includes touchscreen controls, Bluetooth and rear-view camera with affordable Toyota Touch and Go upgrade for satellite navigation and connected multimedia services
  • Touch and Go adds a further two per cent to RV figures quoted by CAP monitor, giving the TR 1.33 VVT-i a best-in-class rating
  • 1.0-litre VVT-i TR model available for just £214 a month through Access Toyota PCP, with the street-smart 1.33 Dual SR model adding just another £10 to the monthly payment*
  • Touch and Go upgrade offered for free on Yaris TR, SR and T Spirit for first six months of sales

Chelsea AutoLegends, a showcase of automotive excellence in London On Sunday 4th September

View Comments

London’s biggest show on wheels is almost here. On Sunday 4 September, the Royal Hospital in Chelsea will host Chelsea AutoLegends, a showcase of automotive excellence that promises displays of some of the most desirable, rare, exciting and historically important cars ever made.
Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, the 2011 edition of Chelsea AutoLegends has even more to see and do. There are special displays devoted to the iconic Jaguar E-type and Mini Cooper – both celebrating their 50th birthday this year – plus a central display of Le Mans racers and cavalcades of supercars and classic bikes.
There will be classic cars owned by members of the public on display, while a host of motor sport personalities will visit the show during the day. There’s plenty for the family, too, with fairground rides, simulators and a couple of famous cars with film star class.
And visitors who really want to soak up the atmosphere are encouraged to dig out their kaftans, bell-bottoms, beads and bells and join in with the Swinging Sixties theme, remembering the days when Chelsea’s groovy Kings Road was the hub of global fashion, design and pop music.
Chelsea AutoLegends is held in the grounds of the imposing Royal Hospital in Chelsea, and helps to raise funds for the resident Chelsea Pensioners. Gates open at 10am on Sunday and close at 4pm.
Among the highlights are:
Le Mans: A mouth-watering selection of racing cars that have competed at the most famous race in the world, the Le Mans 24 Hours. The display will chart the history of the event from the Bentleys of the 1920s, through the Jaguar D-types and scarlet Ferraris of the fifties and sixties right up the modern era with high tech prototypes from current pacesetters Aston Martin, Aston Martin and Peugeot.
Jaguar E-type: It might be 50 years old, but the E-type still turns heads… but then no less an authority than Enzo Ferrari once called it the most beautiful car in the world. Some of the world’s most important E-types will be at Chelsea AutoLegends, including I VHP, chassis number 1; ECD 400, the first E-type race winner; and 848 CRY, the E-type that featured in The Italian Job movie.
Supercars: New for 2011 is the PistonHeads Supercar Run in association with The Sunday Times. Some of the world’s rarest and most exotic cars will be joining the show after a Sunday morning run through London. McLarens and Moslers will join Lamborghinis and Ferraris, Koenigseggs, Aston Martins and Porsches in a cavalcade leaving the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall after breakfast and arriving at the show at around midday.
Classic bikes: Bikes and bikers of all shapes and sizes will also be arriving at the show during the morning after a ride from the famous Ace Café on the North Circular. Reflecting military links with the Royal Hospital, the cavalcade will be led by the Royal British Legion Riders Branch and will park up in a dedicated display area of the show. Eight times World Champion Phil Read MBE will be one of the many motor sport stars at the show, too.
The best of the best: That claim is made by Autocar which, earlier this year, celebrated the publication of its 5,000th road test with a poll of the most important tests in the magazine’s long history. The top ten cars will be on display, headed by the 3.8-litre E-type Jaguar fhc registered 9600 HP… the very car the magazine tested 50 years ago.
Invicta: Rare supercar from the 1930, the last examples of the Invicta marque were built in Flood Street, not far from the show. In its day, the Invicta was technically advanced, fast and reliable and considered a genuine rival to Bentley. Among the examples on show will be the car that won the 1931 Monte Carlo Rally in the hands of Donald Healey.
Rally cars: Monsters from the Group B era will also be on display. Rally winning cars like the Audi Sport Quattro and Lancia Delta S4 and 037 will be there along with the mind-blowing Metro 6R4 plus other genuine ex-works cars like the Toyota Celica Turbo and the more recent Ford Focus WRC.
The Patrons: Back in the fifties and sixties, British privateer teams – known as the Patrons – took on the might of the works teams… and often won. A special tribute to Rob Walker, Colonel Ronnie Hoare, Tommy Sopwith and John Coombs will include cars they made famous, such as the 1961 TT-winning Ferrari 250 GT SWB driven by Stirling Moss. A fund-raising dinner will be held in the Great Hall of the Royal Hospital on the eve of the event in aid of the Chelsea Pensioners, attended by Sir Stirling and others with strong historic and family connections.
Mini Cooper: It’s not just the E-type that’s celebrating a 50th birthday this year. The Mini Cooper often humbled much bigger machines on track and rally stage, and among the giant killers on display will be two ‘Monte Carlo’ Minis celebrating the ‘Little Brick’s’ dominance on the event in the 1960s. Monte winner Paddy Hopkirk is another of the motor sport legends who has confirmed his presence.
Track stars: The glory days of 1970s touring car racing will be remembered with a display of Group 1 and Group 2 racers from BMW, Ford and Alfa Romeo, including a 3.0 CSL ‘Batmobile’, a ‘Cologne’ Capri and an Alfa GTam. There’ll also be famous machines from two great British teams of the fifties and sixties: cars (and the renowned transporter) wearing the metallic blue of Ecurie Ecosse and a host of Fords wearing the red and gold of Alan Mann Racing.
Personalities: It’s not all hardware at the show. Some of motor sport’s great names will be on hand to share memories, including event patron Sir Stirling Moss, plus bike legend Phil Read, rallying heroes Paddy Hopkirk and Russell Brooks and Le Mans winner Richard Attwood. TV chef James Martin was one of the many familiar faces seen at last year’s show and he’s returning. Expect some more faces from the world of TV, music and film, too.
Entertainment: Chelsea AutoLegends is a show for the entire family and not just the petrolheads. The organisers have laid on fairground rides and an F1 simulator, plus there’ll be two cars from the world of film – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the Pink Panther car. A wide selection of trade stands will be offering everything from Cuban cigars and classic travel to the very latest supercar, while pampering is available for those seeking relaxation. Adding to activities there will be a silent auction raising further funds for the Royal Hospital. There also are food stalls and bars, and plenty of space for visitors to bring their own picnics.
Showground cars: And there’s more. There’ll be classic cars and bikes wherever you look. More than 200 members of the public are bringing along their pride and joy for all to enjoy. Expect Bristols to rub shoulders with BMWs, Ferraris to share turf with Fords, and MGs to mingle with Maseratis. Cars will run from exotics like a 1955 Gullwing Mercedes via rarities like a Swallow Doretti to a humble ‘Only Fools and Horses’ Reliant Regal Supervan.
“Last year’s inaugural Chelsea AutoLegends was a huge success but we have pulled out all the stops to make the 2011 show even better. There’s more to see and more to do with even more cars on show,” said Chelsea AutoLegends chairman, Eric Verdon-Roe.
And the last word should go to one of the greatest names from motorsport, 16-times Grand Prix winner, event patron and long-time Londoner, Sir Stirling Moss. “London is the centre of the world, a place with a real pulse. It is entirely fitting that somewhere as great as our capital has a show as dynamic as Chelsea AutoLegends,” he said.

Shark released new helmets in new colors for the year 2012

View Comments

Shark is a French company that produces motorcycle helmets, which was founded in 1929 in Marseille, France.Shark places a strong emphasis on safety and quality in their helmets. Their designs concentrate on the dispersion of impact force away from the wearer's head, while utilizing "crumple-zones" like those found on modern automobiles. Because of this, a Shark helmet will appear much more damaged and deformed than a helmet of another make, as it has taken more of the impact to help protect the rider.Another characteristic of Shark helmets is their thick visors, with the RSX and RSR2 models measuring 3 mm thick - the thickest in the industry.

Recently they released some new color helmets for the year 2012.Shark Helmets is taking the unprecedented step of releasing a selection of new 2012 colour options into the UK dealer network early, just a few months before the French manufacturer unveils the rest of the 2012 range.

The Vision –R helmet, introduced in 2011, is the first model to bring a new theme early, as the Syntic offers three different colour options, featuring fresh and bold designs with blocks of colour and thin lines running through. Designed, as the name suggests, with added sight in mind, the Vision -R currently has the largest visor aperture on the market. The Syntic is available in black/grey/white, white/red/black and white/black/grey and priced at £279.99.

The popular S700 series has received a face-lift for the new season and now too includes an internal sun shield, as does the Vision -R. The Stipple colours are sporty and mimic Sharks’ top-of-the-range helmet designs. The Stipple is available in white/grey/black, white/blue/red, and black/grey/white and priced at £159.99.

Last of the preview helmets is the mid-range S600 Moonlight, featuring a high-visibility version with florescent streaks, on top of a black base. The two alternative colours are very subtle in black/white or white/black, with opposite coloured streaks and priced at £109.99.

The preview helmets will be available in Shark dealers from mid-September, with the rest of the collection due for release in November, to find your local dealer visit www.nevis.uk.com

View Comments

Nokia announced the launch of three feature-packed, mass market smart phones, bringing the latest smartphone functionality at attractive price points and including market-leading innovation with Symbian Belle. The Nokia 700, Nokia 701 and Nokia 600 extend the range of available designs, features and functionality in the Nokia Symbian smartphone range.  Symbian Belle powers all three, with single-tap NFC technology sharing and pairing, the most personal user interface so far and a more powerful mobile Web browsing experience. As well as allowing content to be shared between devices, NFC capabilities allow any of the three new smart phones to pair with NFC-enabled mobile accessories such as speakers or Bluetooth headphones and headsets. To extend the range of available NFC-enabled accessories, Nokia is also announcing the launch of the Nokia Essence Bluetooth Stereo Headset, which can be paired with any NFC-enabled smartphone simply by tapping the two devices together.

While all three smart phones contain recognizable Nokia features, they each represent a very distinct set of priorities to allow users to choose what matters most in a smartphone. The most compact touch screen monoblock smartphone in the world (Nokia 700); a sleek and stylish smartphone with the world's brightest mobile display for indoor or outdoor use (Nokia 701), and Nokia's loudest entertainment smartphone (Nokia 600) all bring firsts to the Nokia product portfolio.

"After bringing exciting new features to the Symbian user experience only two months ago with Symbian Anna, we are now driving the platform even further with our most competitive Symbian user experience ever," said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President at Nokia. "Symbian Belle and the three new handsets we are launching today show our commitment to continue delivering Symbian products that allow people to choose what is most important to them in terms of user experience, design, functionality and price.  These will not be last products or updates we will deliver on Symbian."

"With the announcement today Nokia has made it clear that Symbian will continue to play an important role in its product portfolio along side Windows Phone 7" said Nick McQuire IDC. "There is a sense of urgency in the way improvements and innovation are being delivered to the platform that demonstrates how committed Nokia is to make Symbian products a competitive smartphone choice."

Worlds Amazing Island Beaches

View Comments

Seychelles
One of the most photographed beaches in the world, the pale pink sands of Anse Source d’Argent unfurls across the island of La Digue, one of the 115 components of this archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The sands sparkle against a backdrop of towering granite boulders, worn by time and weather. The turquoise water is relatively shallow and protected from the ocean’s waves by a reef.
Anse Source d'Argent,
a famous beach on the island of La Digue,
Seychelles.

The climate is equable although quite humid, as the islands are small. The temperature varies little throughout the year. Temperatures on Mahé vary from 24 to 30 °C (75 to 86 °F), and rainfall ranges from 2,900 mm (114 in) annually at Victoria to 3,600 mm (142 in) on the mountain slopes. Precipitation is somewhat less on the other islands. During the coolest months, July and August, it drops to as low as 24 °C (75 °F). The southeast trade winds blow regularly from May to November, and this is the most pleasant time of the year. The hot months are from December to April, with higher humidity (80%). March and April are the hottest months, but the temperature seldom exceeds 31 °C (88 °F). Most of the islands lie outside the cyclone belt, so high winds are rare.

Maldives
Whether your dream beach trip consists of spending a few pampered nights in a four-star resort or swimming among tropical fish some 80 feet (24 meters) underwater, the Maldives are the sort of islands where either—or both—can come true. Straddling the equator southwest of Sri Lanka, the 1,102 islands that make up the Maldives form 26 atolls. The soft air enveloping the archipelago blends into a beautiful palm-fringed haze.
Maldives

Maldives waters are home to wide variety of ecosystems, but it is most noted for their variety of colorful coral reefs, home to 300 species of fish. Seven species have been described as new to science, several more await description. Over 400 have been identified and catalogued and many are now held in the reference collection, including 5 species of turtles, 51 species of echinoderms, 5 species of sea grasses and 285 species of alga & sponges, crustaceans, and tunicates.

Symbian Anna significantly enhances the user experience on the Nokia N8, Nokia C7, Nokia C6-01 and Nokia E7. A new user interface, virtual QWERTY keypad in portrait mode, split-screen messaging, enhanced Nokia Maps, better web browsing and stronger security are just a few of the improvements that people will be able to enjoy. Symbian Anna can be downloaded using the latest version of Ovi Suite (version 3.1.1) on a PC, or over-the-air directly to your smartphone**.

"Nokia's Symbian smartphones are used by millions of people around the world every day, addressing specific consumer needs and providing choices at many price points," said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President at Nokia. "Symbian Anna represents a significant update to the experience those users have and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to Symbian, which will see up to 10 more phones introduced over the next 12 months, further updates to the user experience and support for the software until at least 2016."
